Positive image from a scan of a Powerhouse Museum, Philipps Collection, glass plate negative Tickets to West End musicals don’t come cheap – unless you want to be sat at the back behind a pillar, that is. So I thought that the more adventurous among you would be interested to know that you can now get FREE seats for Spamalot.

The catch? You have to rock up at the box office dressed as a knight.

Spamalot, based on the cult film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, returned to the West End following Eric Idle’s performance of ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life’ at the 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony. It currently stars Stephen Tompkinson as King Arthur.

Arrive at The Playhouse Theatre at least one hour before curtain up, in your knight costume, and you’ll get seats to see that day’s show free of charge. Basically, you’ll get whatever seats haven’t been sold that day. The nice seats in the stalls go for £65 a pop, so the potential to make significant savings is there – especially if you go on a quieter night, like a Monday.

To guarantee free seats, you need to don at last four of the following knightly accessories:

  • A helmet
  • A hood
  • Chainmail
  • Armour
  • A tunic or tabard
  • A cape
  • Gauntlets
  • A shield

With the exception of the chainmail and gauntlets, you should be able to make the rest of this yourself, if you don’t have a dressing-up box to hand. I know that some shy people wouldn’t countenance getting dressed up like this, but I’d do so happily. It’s Central London: nobody is going to give you a second glance.

Listings Information:

Performance times: Monday – Saturday at 8.00pm, Wednesday and Saturday at 2.30pm

THE PLAYHOUSE THEATRE, Northumberland Avenue, London, WC2N 5DE

The offer runs until 2 November 2013, when the show closes. Management reserve the right to refuse entry. Available only in person at the Box Office on the day. Tickets subject to availability.

P.S. If you are a real knight of the realm and have ID, you don’t have to dress up and they’ll let you in for free anyway. I am not sure many real-life knights read Miss Thrifty though.

I would love that! I am fascinated with that time in history anyway. I like castles, Knights etc. I even thought of buying a castle although I heard it is a money pit.
