I’ve found a cheap new way to clean curtains. Confession time : it’s about reinvigorating rather than washing, but I was reluctant to call this post Reinvigorate curtains the thrifty way as it would have made me sound a bit… Bree from Desperate Housewives. Also, I can’t test it out myself as I don’t have a tumble dryer (ZOMG I am that thrifty), but I like this one’s simplicity/cheapness and want to put it out there, so if you test it out please let me know how well it works.
You need:
- Your drab, dusty curtain(s).
- A tumble dryer.
- A wet towel.
Remove the hooks. Pop your curtain(s) and the wet towel in the tumble dryer and run for 15 minutes.
That’s it! The wet towel picks up the dust – the curtains should come out looking brighter and cleaner.

Some of these tips are alarmingly cat ladyish – like the one about scenting your kitty’s litter tray with talcum powder – but I am going to road test a few of the others, and will report back on the best of the bunch.

This sounds fantastic, but I like you don’t have a tumble dryer. does it work for other dry cleaning situations (like coats or suits for example), if so the investment in a dryer might well be worth it.
The last time I needed to get curtains cleaned (my 2 year old sprayed my cream linen curtains with hot chocolate – nice!) it cost me £70 and they shrunk at the dry cleaners.
I was livid, still am truth be told!!
They’re currently up but look dreadful, I need to take them down, take them apart and re-sew them, but it’s a couple of days work and I just don’t have the time.
