Believe it or not, this works a treat on old, tatty-looking wallpaper. Just rub a slice down the wall, and the bread will pick up the grime.
Cheap white bread seems to works best, for some reason - so even if you end up using the whole loaf, it will cost you no more than 80 pence or thereabouts.

Yes, I tried it a couple of weeks ago. Bit of elbow grease and a copy of The Metro…alas, I did one window and made the mistake of sitting down to admire it with a cup of java and have yet to do the others…

This is a real restorers’ method. I once visited a gorgeous cathedral in Uppsala, Sweden, which had all that lovely wall painting European churches have (Cromwell had it all whitewashed over here about the same time he banned Christmas celebrations and dancing). Local historian/archaeologist told me they kept a bakery in business for two years doing the restoration. No kidding. It rolled the dirt off without damaging the medieval paint, and no waste disposal problem – it all went off to some compost heap. So not just thrifty – professional.
Oh my goodness that’s unbelievable! Who’d have thought bread could be used for cleaning.
