Baked beans: food of the gods

Apparently baked beans are on the rise, as the credit crunch continues to bite (ouch! dreadful pun) here in the UK. Sales of the tinned beans are 12 per cent up on last year.
Before I went and lived in America, I had no idea that baked beans were not bought and consumed with gusto all over the world. Then I discovered cowboy beans! Nom nom. They put our cheapy-cheap beans, in their gloopy, sugary tomato sauce, to shame. (But don’t tell anyone here that I said that, because I’ll get into trouble.)
Sadly, this is one item that is difficult to scrimp on. It’s no good buying an economy tin: you open it up only to find that they are filled to the brim with watery tomato sauce, with one or beans floating forlornly on the top. I usually go for the supermarket’s own brand.
My husband will eat them cold out of the tin - yeuch! My favourite beans on toast recipe is here.

Beans are what got me through four years of college. I prefer them cold but will heat them if I am having them on toast.
I had some distressing news earlier this year when I was told that I have an intolerance to them! Didn’t stop me though!
